Counting and recognition of numbers are basic Mathematics skills. As such, children should be encouraged to participate in various types of counting activities in order to pick up these skills successfully.

Here are just some of the many activities you can try at home! Example: Tossing a die and getting your child to count the number of circles that appear at the top of the die.

Another simple idea to introduce rational counting and number recognition is through the use of a picture book. Count the number of pictures seen in the book. To make it more fun, add an action to the activity, for example: If your child counts 3 bears, encourage him to clap his hands at the same time, clapping 3 times while counting aloud. Repeat the process for other numbers and participate in your child’s learning by clapping along with your child.

"Hmmm...what other shapes can I feel and pick out of this 'Mystery Bag'?"

Next up, recognising shapes! Children usually have an innate understanding of basic shapes and once introduced, they are able to recognise them easily.

To introduce shapes in a different yet fun and engaging way, try using a ‘Mystery Bag’! Put some basic shapes inside the bag eg:circles, rectangles, squares and triangles. The child simply needs to reach into the bag and through the feeling of touch, pick out one shape at a time to identify and name it. You can even teach your child to match same shapes and sort sizes!

So you see, with these simple and easy to prepare enjoyable activities, learning Mathematics can be engrossing, delightful and can help your child learn numbers and shapes as easy as 1,2,3!

Everyone needs to understand the value of money and learn to use it wisely.

During a Kindergarten 2 Maths activity on the concept of ‘Money’, the class was transformed into a mini convenience store where the children had the opportunity to role-play as a shopkeeper and a customer. The objective of this hands-on, role-playing activity was to allow children the experience of shopping on their own and understanding the concept of tendering amounts and giving change.

Before the activity, the class got into a discussion on the shopping trips they’ve had with their parents and their understanding of pricing and payment. Next, we revised number bonds using dollars and cents. For example, 2 fifty-cents make up $1 and 5 twenty-cents make up $1. Lastly, children and teacher decided on the various items we should put up on sale in our make-believe shop and figured out their estimated cost . With everything set up, it’s time for the children to role-play!

"Here's $5, can I have my change, please?" says the customer.

At the end of the activity, the teacher rounded up the children to ask questions such as: “What happens if you give the shopkeeper too much money? If the item costs $1.50 and you give the shopkeeper $5, it that too much? Should the shopkeeper keep the $5? If not, what should the shopkeeper do?” This helps the children think through and reflect on the many different scenarios that may arise from purchasing in real-life scenarios. Given the broad smiles and laughter filling the room, this activity proved to be an effective and entertaining way to allow children to gain a better understanding of the concept of ‘Money’!

Take a glimpse into some fun time with the class of Nursery One (a group of 5 children who are barely 3 years old) as I incorporate Blossom’s 3 learning styles (VAK) into one of our English Language lessons for the letter shape ‘h’.

Flashcard of Letterlander Harry Hat Man

Visual
Displaying of flashcards on the wall for a print rich environment
My aim is to provide the children some prints to look at everyday, for them to eventually learn to recognise the shape of Harry Hat Man.

Visual and Auditory
The word ‘house’ is introduced as having the same beginning sound as Harry Hat Man’s ‘h’. To extend the children’s learning on the concept of a house, the story book ‘’This is Our House’ was read. The children learnt through seeing the pictures in the book and by listening to the story.

Auditory
Letterland gives life to each letter as they associate each letter with a different Letterland character! For example: Harry Hat Man hides behind the letter ‘h’ His song lyrics are so catchy that even the very young ones will have no problems singing along.

Kinesthetic
The children not only see and touch but also have a more concrete learning of witnessing a 3D house being constructed with some reusable cardboard!

Our house is too plain. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get messy painting all parts of the house!

They gained awareness of the basic structures of a house eg: walls, roof, windows, door, etc.

After all the workout with the three learning styles, Yong Quan was seen pointing to the letter ‘h’ while browsing through a story book during quiet time.

To further aid in his recognition of letter ‘h’, I flipped to the next page and prompted him to hunt for the letter ‘h’, Harry Hat Man. He exhibited awareness of the letter shape and even attempted to sound its corresponding sound.

The children were also more spontaneous to actively seek for Harry Hat Man, either when they spotted one (the display of sandpaper and flashcard with the letter shape) or when I called out for the shape ‘h’.

Kindermusik’s ‘ABC Music & Me’, a music and movement programme is offered under our Creative Expression and Thematic Learning lesson for young children between the ages of 18 months to 3 years old. The music programme introduces general body movements, musical instruments, encourages listening and learning through multi-sensory approach such as high/low, loud/quiet, fast/slow, long/short.

In a Kindermusik class, children learn to sing, play, move and interact with one another . Through these activities, children have an opportunity to enhance their physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth. By participating in these activities, they too, learn to develop self-esteem and social skills.

All together now,"Cow in the kitchen, moo, moo, moo!"

At the beginning of every lesson, children and teachers greet one another by singing the ‘Hello’ song. This song allows the children to feel comfortable and get them all geared up and ready for learning and bopping along with the music.

Activities like singing, vocal play, movement, instrument exploration, focused listening and story-time are frequently carried out in class. Before the end of the lesson, the teacher would gather the children together again to sing the “Good-bye” song before a Kindermusik class is dismissed.

Through the Kindermusik’s ‘ABC Music & Me’ programme, we witnessed how music has brought joy and creativity and provided our children with rich sensorial learning experiences. This has reinforced our belief that every child has musical talent and music nurture the child’s physical, cognitive, linguistic, social and emotional development.

Our children had the opportunity to exercise various parts of their body through a fun and enjoyable lesson PE lesson with Mdm Yuan.

Firstly, to get the childen ready, warm up exercises which included stretching, jumping and bending of the muscles were carried out. Through Mdm Yuan’s thorough demonstration, children were able to learn the correct ways of stretching without injuring themselves.

To capture the children’s attention, imagination and interest in the physical activity, a imaginary forest was created with mattresses as wet ground, balancing beams as bridges, hula hoops as mountains and bubble foams as streams! The children were divided into groups as they pretended to be animals competing and racing through a forest laced with obstacles!

The children not only practised their gross motor skills but also developed team work. To end the whole activity, children relaxed and cooled down with simple and light exercises as they warmed down.

They were divided into 2 groups where they were given an envelope which contained 6 steps in writing a letter.

Next, the children discussed eagerly and cooperated among themselves to arrange the cards in order from Step 1 to Step 6. This fun and friendly competition among the groups had the children chattering loudly and excitedly!

After arranging the cards, the children tried to remember the steps as they used all sizes and colours of marker pens to write the steps down on a piece of paper. This activity allows the children to be more familiar with a letter writing experience.

The final stages of this letter writing lesson had the children thinking up and writing their lines on a letter writing template and lastly, being introduced to the steps of getting a letter ready to be posted by mail.

After the children’s enthusiastic writing, they folded their letters into three folds and placed them in envelopes. They sealed it with love and pasted the stamp on the right hand corner of the envelope.

With the help from the teacher, they wrote the address on the front of the envelope. The letters were then collected by the teacher for mailing, and the children were eagerly checking when their loved ones received their letters. It was indeed a fun experience for the children to write their own letter!

Children love water play, all sorts of water play! And for the children, turning a lesson on ’Water’ into hands-on, play time is always welcomed with open arms! This term, Mdm Chen gave the children an opportunity to learn all about water. Through fun and entertaining mini experiments, exploration and class discussions, Mdm Chen facilitated the children to learn about our water sources and many important uses of water.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the processes Mdm Chen took them through as they explored the world of water and the ways in which they can conserve it! As always, the inquisitive children asked plenty of questions, eager to learn more and everything they need to know about water.
