Identifying good and bad rubrics

The main focus of Blossom’s second staff workshop of the year was to review the assessment rubrics being used in the children’s progress reports found in our e-profiling. The preparatory work began a couple of months prior to the workshop with the training for subject coordinators and the review of the entire set of rubrics for each subject for all the levels from Playgroup to Kindergarten 2. On the day of the workshop, following a brief training, detailed discussions were held with the teachers from the different centres teaching each of the subjects, during which necessary amendments to the rubrics were decided. These changes will be incorporated into the assessment rubrics for the next year.

At Blossom, we constantly review and update our curriculum. The second half of the staff workshop was set aside for reviewing the curriculum in 2011. The teachers are given two curriculum review forms for the subjects under their purview, one in the first half of the year before the subject meetings and the other during the second half of the year before the staff workshop. The teachers will reflect on what they have taught and highlight any problems or issues with the syllabus and suggest possible solutions or amendments to be made to the curriculum.

Subject meetings are also held to gather all of the teachers’ feedback. During the workshop, the teachers and the subject co-ordinators reviewed the curriculum for the whole year, while incorporating the amendments suggested in the two curriculum review forms as well as the subject meetings. With this, the curriculum for the following new year is finalised.

Blossom Edugroup’s 2011 ‘Best Staff Award’ went to Teacher Jasline of Blossom Creative Centre!

Teacher Jasline possesses a cherry disposition and is a diligent worker who cooperates well with colleagues and management and often lends a hand to everyone. Besides having a good teacher-child relationship, she has also developed great rapport with parents, regularly updating parents of their children’s progress and development. She also does not hesitate to help the teachers in other ways other than assisting the class and be a hands-on contributor to the well-being of the children in our centre.

A fantastic assistant teacher, she has proven to be an asset in whichever class she helps assist. A firm educator who is experienced in assisting the main teacher in class management, she is able to train our younger children in self-help skills and assist the teacher in helping the form teachers deal with behavioural issues in class. Using her initiative to engage the children in music and movement, she is also a wonderful teacher who dotes on all the children and is excellent in adjusting new children. The children in her classes love her very much and so do all their parents!

Congratulations Teacher Geetha! We wish you many more happy years working at Blossom!

A worthy recipient for the Best Staff Award 2011, we would like to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank Teacher Jasline for her immeasurable dedication and commitment to Blossom and to the children and parents of Blossom Creative Centre!

Next up, we also took the opportunity to honour the only receipient of 2011 Blossom Edugroup’s ‘Long Service Award’! This award went to Teacher Geetha of Blossom Creative Centre! A hearty congratulations and a big thank you for her hard work and dedication towards the children and our organisation through the years!

Parents’ Education Workshop: ‘Playtime! An Interactive Workhop on Good Manners’

Actions really do speak louder than words and parental role modeling helps teach children to be caring and kind. In fact, parents have the power to nurture, guide, show and instill kindness, responsibility and gentleness. Young children do not automatically use manners. Like apologizing and sharing, learning to use manners is part of a child’s social development and is best learnt through modelling and coaching, not by force. When children are polite, kind and honest, they develop character and also make their parents look good!

Good manners are important skills children should develop when they are young. After all, manners are beneficial for the rest of their lives. For children to be successful in life, they need to have social skills as well as academic skills. And if parents help young children learn polite and caring behavior, they will continue to use good manners and become more socially aware as they get older. Children become what they absorb around them. Be what you want them to become, and treat them the way you wish them to learn to be with others.

As such, Blossom organised an interactive ‘Playtime’ workshop on ‘Good Manners’ to help parents learn to educate their child with this ‘lifelong survival skill’ and learn tips on how to make learning manners fun! The workshop was conducted on the morning of 23 July 2011 (Sat) at Blossom Creative Centre (Bedok branch). The trainer, Ms Rosalind Yeow, is a trained facilitator for Parenting with Confidence and Playtime programs. She is passionate about proactive parenting and encouraging families to set a good foundation especially while their children are young.

All participants, young and old had loads of fun as Ms Yeow offered great advice for our parents and engaged the children in a myraid of fun activities to promote good manners among them. Besides having fun, she also gave parents some tips on how to instil good manners in their children. During the workshop, we learnt that teaching young kids manners is an on-going process. Try to be patient, and keep our expectations in line with what our child is capable of achieving at his/her age. Our time and patience will be rewarded every time he/she says “please” and “thank you”. The session ended with parents taking home valuable knowledge and tips for practising good manners with their children.

Every child is capable of age-appropriate manners. We cannot expect young children to be perfectly well-behaved all the time but we can get them in the habit of practising polite behavior early on. Children become what they absorb around them. Be what you want them to become and treat them the way you wish them to learn to be with others.

Of Aeroplanes & Occupations @ Changi Airport

"Let's take a look at the various features of Changi Airport, K1s!" says Teacher Jet

Blossom Creative Centre’s children and teachers headed to Changi Airport Terminal 3 to learn more about ‘Community Helpers’ as part of our June school holiday program. The children explored the airport and were introduced to the various occupations that can be found at the airport eg: pilots, flight attendants passenger service agents and other airport staff work. Some of airport ground staff even spoke to the children and introduced various parts about their jobs as the teachers guided the children in understanding the display monitors which informs people of flight arrival and departure timings. The children were amazed when informed of the estimated number of people passing by the airport each day!

The teachers also took this valuable opportunity to fill the children in on the nature of the various community helpers’ jobs and introduced all the facilities that can be found at the airport. The children were amazed when informed of the estimated number of people passing by the airport each day!Besides the fun experience riding the sky train to terminal 2 and back to terminal 3. The children were super excited to have an aerial view of Changi Airport’s surrounds, including the control tower.

After the train ride, we went to the viewing gallery where they got to see the aeroplanes moving and preparation for their next flight. We even managed to catch a glimpse of an aeroplane landing! Through the many information panels at the viewing gallery, the children acquired a lot of information about the Changi Airport such as its origin, how it was started and who were the people behind it. We also saw miniature models of different kinds of aeroplanes used at the airport and only wished we could take one home! We also learnt that these aeroplanes not only transport people to different places, but also animals and how they are being transported.

To sum up an enjoyable and meaningful excursion, the children went to the activity corner where they enjoyed colouring pictures of the airport and different aircrafts, completing some puzzles and playing at the playground. It was indeed a long but meaningful day for the children!

Playtime Parenting Workshop For 2 & 3 Year Olds

Jointly organized by Blossom Edugroup and Focus on the Family, Playtime for Good Manners is an interactive, hands-on workshop for parents and their pre-schoolers (2 and 3 years old) to bond through play.

An excellent platform that engages parents and their pre-schoolers, this fun-filled workshop includes activities like:

Synopsis of Facilitator’s Profile:

Rosalind Yeow, is a volunteer with Focus on the Family Singapore as a trained facilitator for Parenting with Confidence and Playtime programs. She is passionate about proactive parenting and encouraging parents to set a good family foundation with their young kids.

Besides writing freelance for parenting magazines, she is also actively involved in parenting projects and a variety of family bonding events.

Rosalind is happily married to Andrew. As a family, they love playing board games and going swimming with their children – Samantha, Samuel and Steward.

Learning Together….Laughing Together: Blossom Edugroup’s Annual Staff Workshop

Blossom Creative Centre's staff boogied into the judges' hearts with their tambourines, egg shakers and retro moves!

Focusing on improving on our curriculum and the all round development of children is of utmost importance here at Blossom Edugroup. More than that, Blossom also aims to develop camaraderie and good relationships among all its staff spread out across 4 different branches.

It is with this in mind that a staff workshop is conducted for the staff annually, where we come together to share ideas for improvement, get to know each and every staff and work hand in hand to seek continual improvement for all our centres.

Part 1 of the workshop was held at Blossom Educare Centre where the staff maintained a positive atmosphere of continuous learning. Each teacher had the opportunity to share with the rest, one lesson they have carried out in the class including the songs, visual aids, games and learning materials used. After listening, the rest of us took turns to share our comments and give suggestions on great lesson ideas and suggested improvements. Sharing ideas with one another also encourages teachers to try out various teaching methods and learn to be confident in their very own lesson deliveries!

Part 2 of the workshop was fun, fun and more fun! Over the years, we have had a retreat, an ‘Amazing Race’ like competition and a barbecue. This year, the teachers let our hair down and sang our hearts out at a Karaoke session. All the centres prepared a song and dance number which included 1 group performance and 1 solo item by a nominated budding talent! . Each
performance displayed creativity and immense unity among members of the group. Everyone had a blast watching their colleagues shed their usual proper and straight laced images into funky dancing and singing divas!

The highlight of the competition was the individual singing segment where each centre had their representatives strut their stuff. Miss Jin Xue from Blossom Educare and Teacher Susilawati from Blossom Creative Centre were no doubt, the shining stars of the day! The group prize was taken home by the staff of Blossom Creative Centre for their outrageous retro dance steps, led by lead singer, Teacher Susila as she belted out ‘Dancing Queen’ by Abba!

At the end of the day, everybody had loads of fun and totally agreed that it was good for the staff, teachers and the management to take time out to relax, laugh and bond with one another, in order to work cooperatively and get along harmoniously!

‘One Moment of Glory’ for Blossom Berrykidz and Blossom Creative Centres

Grooving to a Mexican tune!

Blossom Berrykidz Centre and Blossom Creative Centre commemorated our graduating classes of Kindergarten 2 children by once again, holding a Graduation Ceremony cum Concert in December 2010. This time, the concert was held at the DBS auditorium.

The event kicked off with a speech by Blossom Edugroup’s principal Mr Lawrence Lim, as he addressed the milestones Blossom Edugroup has reached through the year as well as, new projects and developments it will undertake in 2011. The concert officially commenced after that, with the graduating classes taking center stage!

Following the graduation ceremony, our emcees for the day did a fantastic job of welcoming the audience and introducing each centre’s individual items. The theme for the evening was ‘One Moment of Glory’, where our children got to showcase their talents as they put up fabulous individual class and enrichment peformances for the audience! The ever sporting audience which consisted of proud parents and family members cheered on they waited for each item with anticipation and cheered on all our little ones during their performanceswith enthusiasm!

An array of performances by our little ones from both centres included some crowd favourites – Chinese Recitals by the Kindergarten 1 children and the ever popular Ketchup and Mexican dances by the Nursery 2 children!

The STOMP inspired item by the Kindergarten 2 kids was a admirable attempt at working on their concentration and coordination, getting the right beats using sticks, chairs and other recycled materials! Their stage presence and captivating moves kept everyone cheering and clapping in awe!

It was truly a proud moment for parents, children and teachers alike! See you again in 2011!

用我的小手将水果串一串。哇，水果真好吃！

生活本身就是大课程，不论是在日常生活中还是在模拟的生活情景中，从小引导孩子学习自己动手做事、动脑思考解决问题、学习与同伴合作、共同分享等等，都是非常重要的，这样慢慢地让他们学习如何独立。我们的生活课程包含：个人自理能力、自理活动、烹饪、小肌肉动作的技能以及品德教育。

烹饪——人们都说嘴巴馋是孩子的天性，我们认为，吃是人的第一需要，吃什么、怎么吃，可就大有学问。这个学问就要让孩子们从小就懂得探寻。我们通过烹饪课程，不但引导幼儿学习涂抹、搅拌、煎、榨、等技能，让幼儿学习自制三明治、水果、蔬菜沙拉、果汁、煎鸡蛋、煎饼等，还使幼儿了解这些食品的营养成分，教育幼儿从小认清绿色食品，吃健康食物。

瞧！我的小手很能干吧！

玩沙、玩水——孩子是非常爱玩沙和水的，因为它们可塑性强，能发挥孩子的创造力。玩水游戏可以让孩子认识水的性能，丰富有关水的知识，获得愉快和满足。玩沙幼儿可以激起幼儿的想象力和创造力，以及解决问题的能力。通过玩沙、玩水，不但可以加深幼儿对沙和水的感性认识，还可以引导幼儿的玩的过程中，练习各种技能，如：摇、舀、等，更好地发展幼儿的小肌肉技能，从而让我们的教育真正体现在轻松玩，快乐学。

品德教育——孩子们在成长过程中，会遇到各种各样的问题，从小树立他们的自信心、在与他人一起时懂得轮流，懂得尊重他人、知道和同伴如何保持积极互动的关系，我们一般通过讲故事，表演故事，模拟日常生活情境等方式引导幼儿学习。生活是一种实践、一种参与，也是一种体验。教育要利用生活，教育要使幼儿学会生活，教育是为了生活得更美好。

Germs, Germs, Get Away from Blossom Creative Centre!

The Health Promotion Board set out to send a message across to Blossom Creative Centre about hygiene through an animated role-play performance. The cast, made up of a trio, Zac, Didi and Katie Cat, were invited by the school to entertain the children with their hilarious antics as they taught everyone good hygiene practices through their ‘Germs, Germs, Go Away’ skit.

"Wishy, Washy, this is how I keep my hands clean and free of germs!"

The main aim of the performance was to instill and reinforce good hygiene habits to children while highlighting the don’ts as well. Zac , Didi and Katie Cat then proceeded to teach the children the proper steps to washing their hands before, after meals and play and reminded the children to cover their mouths while coughing and sneezing!

"Germs, germs, go away! Keep clean so they won't attack you!"

There wasn’t a dull moment in the act as the characters asked questions about personal hygiene, told jokes and sang the ‘Washy Washy Clean’ song together with the children. The children were thoroughly entertained and paid close attention to the trio as they acted out different scenarios of good personal hygiene!

And what could have been more appropriate in reiterating good hygiene practices than to present each child a souvenir bottle of ‘Lifebuoy’ body soap, for being the enthusiastic and keen audience they were. It was indeed wonderful to have Zac, Didi and Katie Cat visit Blossom Creative Centre that morning! Till then, all the teachers and children wait anxiously for the next Health Promotion Board skit!

新年好!

用我的小手来搓汤圆。

“新年好呀，新年好呀……”伴着这欢快悦耳的歌曲，我们迎来了2011年兔年。花萌启发中心的小朋友和老师们向大家拜年了！恭祝大家：家庭和和美美，事业一帆风顺；生活幸福，天天快乐！

新年总是热闹的，充满着浓郁的欢乐气氛。看啊！幼儿园里到处挂满了许多新年的饰品，那火红的春联及幼儿亲手制作的一些新年手工作品，使幼儿园显得更加喜庆。小朋友们穿着漂亮的新年服装，脸上洋溢着愉快的笑容，多可爱美丽啊！

瞧！小小舞狮团来了。

老师通过故事“年的传说”，向小朋友们讲解了年的由来以及人们如何在新年期间点燃炮竹，贴春联，走亲访友去拜年等一些华人新年的习俗!

老师还教小朋友们在新年里，学说一些吉祥话，如：新年快乐、恭喜发财、大吉大利、万事如意、身体健康等，将一句句美好的祝福传递给他们。接着老师还让小朋友们学习如何舞狮子，他们头戴着狮子的头饰，都兴奋得活蹦乱跳，尽情地模仿着狮子的动作。

最后师生们在一起做汤圆，大家揉呀，揉呀，一粒粒小小的圆圆的汤圆在手心里滚动，代表着在新的一年里，所有人的生活都团团圆圆，幸福美满！
