Identifying good and bad rubrics

The main focus of Blossom’s second staff workshop of the year was to review the assessment rubrics being used in the children’s progress reports found in our e-profiling. The preparatory work began a couple of months prior to the workshop with the training for subject coordinators and the review of the entire set of rubrics for each subject for all the levels from Playgroup to Kindergarten 2. On the day of the workshop, following a brief training, detailed discussions were held with the teachers from the different centres teaching each of the subjects, during which necessary amendments to the rubrics were decided. These changes will be incorporated into the assessment rubrics for the next year.

At Blossom, we constantly review and update our curriculum. The second half of the staff workshop was set aside for reviewing the curriculum in 2011. The teachers are given two curriculum review forms for the subjects under their purview, one in the first half of the year before the subject meetings and the other during the second half of the year before the staff workshop. The teachers will reflect on what they have taught and highlight any problems or issues with the syllabus and suggest possible solutions or amendments to be made to the curriculum.

Subject meetings are also held to gather all of the teachers’ feedback. During the workshop, the teachers and the subject co-ordinators reviewed the curriculum for the whole year, while incorporating the amendments suggested in the two curriculum review forms as well as the subject meetings. With this, the curriculum for the following new year is finalised.

"We just cant wait to start baking!"

The children of Blossom Educare embarked on a “baking” journey with Chef@Cookery Studio to bake cupcakes and doughnuts this September.

The K1 and K2 children travelled to Chef@Cookery Studio to try their hands at baking cupcakes. While there, the children listened attentively as the trainer introduced step by step instructions on cupcake baking and watched a video demonstration too!

"Hmmm...how should I decorate my cupcake?"

The children couldn’t contain their excitement and chatter while they waited patiently to lay their hands on the ingredients and start creating their very own cupcake masterpiece! Everyone was thrilled to have the opportunity to bake and decorate their own cupcakes from scratch! What fun it was decorating the cupcakes with marshmallows, M&Ms, rainbow-coloured sprinkles and so many many more!

Viola! What a surprise the teachers had when they saw the lovely creations the children made for themselves! Each child’s masterpiece was a rainbow of colours and looked absolutely mouth-watering too!

Our younger ones weren’t left out on this baking adventure of course! The trainer from Chef@CookeryStudio made a special trip down to our centre to conduct the baking class for our little ones! This time, the children had a go at decorating doughnuts! Each of them were given a plain to decorate. Such fun they had decorating the dougnuts with various chocolate dips and sugary snacks!

What a finger-licking good time the children had as many were seen licking off chocolate syrup from their fingers! Some were also busy popping the decorations into their mouths while busying with the decoration! Such splendid time the children had as they exercised their 4 senses of touch, taste, sight and smell through this hands-on activity!

Parents’ Education Workshop: ‘Playtime! An Interactive Workhop on Good Manners’

Actions really do speak louder than words and parental role modeling helps teach children to be caring and kind. In fact, parents have the power to nurture, guide, show and instill kindness, responsibility and gentleness. Young children do not automatically use manners. Like apologizing and sharing, learning to use manners is part of a child’s social development and is best learnt through modelling and coaching, not by force. When children are polite, kind and honest, they develop character and also make their parents look good!

Good manners are important skills children should develop when they are young. After all, manners are beneficial for the rest of their lives. For children to be successful in life, they need to have social skills as well as academic skills. And if parents help young children learn polite and caring behavior, they will continue to use good manners and become more socially aware as they get older. Children become what they absorb around them. Be what you want them to become, and treat them the way you wish them to learn to be with others.

As such, Blossom organised an interactive ‘Playtime’ workshop on ‘Good Manners’ to help parents learn to educate their child with this ‘lifelong survival skill’ and learn tips on how to make learning manners fun! The workshop was conducted on the morning of 23 July 2011 (Sat) at Blossom Creative Centre (Bedok branch). The trainer, Ms Rosalind Yeow, is a trained facilitator for Parenting with Confidence and Playtime programs. She is passionate about proactive parenting and encouraging families to set a good foundation especially while their children are young.

All participants, young and old had loads of fun as Ms Yeow offered great advice for our parents and engaged the children in a myraid of fun activities to promote good manners among them. Besides having fun, she also gave parents some tips on how to instil good manners in their children. During the workshop, we learnt that teaching young kids manners is an on-going process. Try to be patient, and keep our expectations in line with what our child is capable of achieving at his/her age. Our time and patience will be rewarded every time he/she says “please” and “thank you”. The session ended with parents taking home valuable knowledge and tips for practising good manners with their children.

Every child is capable of age-appropriate manners. We cannot expect young children to be perfectly well-behaved all the time but we can get them in the habit of practising polite behavior early on. Children become what they absorb around them. Be what you want them to become and treat them the way you wish them to learn to be with others.

Learning takes place with online games!

Upon arriving at the NEWater Visitor Centre, children and teachers were warmly welcomed by all the staff and were quickly ushered into the auditorium where we watched we watched a short clip on the importance of water, sources of water and saving water.After watching the clip, there was a question and answer session and some online games for the children to attempt before heading on to the next activity lined up just for Blossom Educare!

Next, we were introduced to water distillation. The children listened attentive as the guide explained the distillation process through videos and computer graphics. The guide patiently explained and showed us pictures of the step-by-step process in creating NEWater at the NEWater factory.

Water is precious, let's learn ways to conserve it!

Did you know that there are four stages in which water gets distilled as NEWater? They are: Microfiltration, Reverse Osmosis, Ultraviolet Disinfection and Water Conditioning. After the introduction, majority of the children needed little help in remembering the four stages! Way to go, kids!

Through this excursion, children and adults alike walked away with new found knowledge on the essence of life, WATER! We also learnt the many ways in which to save water and all start with each and everyone of us! Last but not least, we were duly reminded that water is precious and to save and use it wisely!

Learning Together….Laughing Together: Blossom Edugroup’s Annual Staff Workshop

Blossom Creative Centre's staff boogied into the judges' hearts with their tambourines, egg shakers and retro moves!

Focusing on improving on our curriculum and the all round development of children is of utmost importance here at Blossom Edugroup. More than that, Blossom also aims to develop camaraderie and good relationships among all its staff spread out across 4 different branches.

It is with this in mind that a staff workshop is conducted for the staff annually, where we come together to share ideas for improvement, get to know each and every staff and work hand in hand to seek continual improvement for all our centres.

Part 1 of the workshop was held at Blossom Educare Centre where the staff maintained a positive atmosphere of continuous learning. Each teacher had the opportunity to share with the rest, one lesson they have carried out in the class including the songs, visual aids, games and learning materials used. After listening, the rest of us took turns to share our comments and give suggestions on great lesson ideas and suggested improvements. Sharing ideas with one another also encourages teachers to try out various teaching methods and learn to be confident in their very own lesson deliveries!

Part 2 of the workshop was fun, fun and more fun! Over the years, we have had a retreat, an ‘Amazing Race’ like competition and a barbecue. This year, the teachers let our hair down and sang our hearts out at a Karaoke session. All the centres prepared a song and dance number which included 1 group performance and 1 solo item by a nominated budding talent! . Each
performance displayed creativity and immense unity among members of the group. Everyone had a blast watching their colleagues shed their usual proper and straight laced images into funky dancing and singing divas!

The highlight of the competition was the individual singing segment where each centre had their representatives strut their stuff. Miss Jin Xue from Blossom Educare and Teacher Susilawati from Blossom Creative Centre were no doubt, the shining stars of the day! The group prize was taken home by the staff of Blossom Creative Centre for their outrageous retro dance steps, led by lead singer, Teacher Susila as she belted out ‘Dancing Queen’ by Abba!

At the end of the day, everybody had loads of fun and totally agreed that it was good for the staff, teachers and the management to take time out to relax, laugh and bond with one another, in order to work cooperatively and get along harmoniously!

通过手工制作，让幼儿加深了解水果的名称和外形。

教学目标：

1、通过各种感官认识并会分辨不同的水果

2、引导幼儿学会用简短的句子说出自己爱吃的水果名称、形状、颜色以及味道等

如：我爱吃……；圆圆的苹果、长长的香蕉、紫色的葡萄、甜甜的西瓜、酸酸的橙等

3、通过各类手工活动：彩色、粘帖、材料制作等教学手段，加深幼儿对不同水果的认识

4、让幼儿主动参与活动，并能感受其中的快乐

用我的小嘴巴尝一尝，吃的水果是甜还是酸？

通过感官引导幼儿认识常见的各种水果。首先让幼儿摸出布袋里的水果，并猜一猜是什么水果，再拿出来看一看，自己猜得对不对，由此引导幼儿认识水果的名称。除了让幼儿用手摸、用眼睛看，老师还通过用鼻子闻的方法，来让幼儿进一步认识水果。让我们一起闭上小眼睛，用鼻子闻一闻不同水果的味道。

卖西瓜啰！又大又甜的西瓜！

让幼儿学习比较水果的外形有什么不同，首先摸一摸苹果和香蕉，并引导幼儿说出“圆圆的苹果”，“长长的香蕉”。让幼儿尝一尝不同的水果，并懂得分辨水果的不同味道，感觉什么是甜的，什么是酸的。老师通过念儿歌、唱歌、游戏、手工等活动，进一步认识不同的水果。如：唱歌曲《大苹果》，念儿歌《排排坐》《大西瓜》，并让幼儿知道多吃水果，身体棒！

在此次教学活动中，我们引导幼儿由内到外地认识各种水果，通过充分地观察和感受，孩子们认识到了水果的不同名称，同时对颜色、形状、味道也有了更多的认识。在活动中，我们还注意渗透幼儿交往能力的培养，注重引导幼儿充分感受并表达分享的快乐。在《分苹果》《水果店》等游戏活动中，促使幼儿在情感和能力方面得到了很好的发展。

用我的小手将水果串一串。哇，水果真好吃！

生活本身就是大课程，不论是在日常生活中还是在模拟的生活情景中，从小引导孩子学习自己动手做事、动脑思考解决问题、学习与同伴合作、共同分享等等，都是非常重要的，这样慢慢地让他们学习如何独立。我们的生活课程包含：个人自理能力、自理活动、烹饪、小肌肉动作的技能以及品德教育。

烹饪——人们都说嘴巴馋是孩子的天性，我们认为，吃是人的第一需要，吃什么、怎么吃，可就大有学问。这个学问就要让孩子们从小就懂得探寻。我们通过烹饪课程，不但引导幼儿学习涂抹、搅拌、煎、榨、等技能，让幼儿学习自制三明治、水果、蔬菜沙拉、果汁、煎鸡蛋、煎饼等，还使幼儿了解这些食品的营养成分，教育幼儿从小认清绿色食品，吃健康食物。

瞧！我的小手很能干吧！

玩沙、玩水——孩子是非常爱玩沙和水的，因为它们可塑性强，能发挥孩子的创造力。玩水游戏可以让孩子认识水的性能，丰富有关水的知识，获得愉快和满足。玩沙幼儿可以激起幼儿的想象力和创造力，以及解决问题的能力。通过玩沙、玩水，不但可以加深幼儿对沙和水的感性认识，还可以引导幼儿的玩的过程中，练习各种技能，如：摇、舀、等，更好地发展幼儿的小肌肉技能，从而让我们的教育真正体现在轻松玩，快乐学。

品德教育——孩子们在成长过程中，会遇到各种各样的问题，从小树立他们的自信心、在与他人一起时懂得轮流，懂得尊重他人、知道和同伴如何保持积极互动的关系，我们一般通过讲故事，表演故事，模拟日常生活情境等方式引导幼儿学习。生活是一种实践、一种参与，也是一种体验。教育要利用生活，教育要使幼儿学会生活，教育是为了生活得更美好。

Peek-a-Boo this March!

The children listened attentively to the safety rules they have to observe while at play!

To coincide with our March holiday theme, “Healthy Lifestyle through Fun Exercises”, we went on a trip to ‘Peek-a-Boo’ where our children had the opportunity to exercise and work out various parts of their bodies through a fun and vigorous way!

Upon entering, the children were greeted by enormous play equipment as many of them squealed with excitement……… 2 whole hours of fun, fun and loads more fun ! First up, the guide introduced the various types of equipment and placed special emphasis on safety. Safety always comes first, wherever we go!

"Watch me fall into the ball pool! Wheeeee....."

Next, the children wasted no time in getting on with their play as they immersed themselves with the colourful ball pool and endless tunnels. Squeals of laughter and delight could be heard as the children interacted with one another, egging one another on as they challenged their physical abilities as they weaved their agile bodies through the different sections of the play area.

As they left ‘Peek-a-Boo’, everyone including the teachers had only one thing on their minds: “We will definately be back for more endless fun the next time!”

Blossom Edugroup Curriculum Briefing 2011

Parents listened attentively as we explained our "Triple Track Syllabus".

Blossom Edugroup constantly engages in upgrading its teaching and learning curriculum in order to ensure that our children are provided with the most up-to-date pre-school curriculum. At the start of every academic year, we organise briefings for parents to highlight the salient features of our curriculum .

This year we conducted four individual centre curriculum briefings. In addition to providing an overview of our curriculum, the main objectives of this year’s briefings were to share the two key curriculum focal points: Blossom’s ‘Triple Track Syllabus’, the incorporation of different learning styles of children in the lesson design and reviewing the ‘Parent Partnership Programme’ which was introduced into the curriculum last year. Each briefing began with an overview of the curriculum presented by the Principal and the Supervisors. It provided an opportunity for the parents to familiarise themselves with the curriculum, as well as to have their queries answered.

The presentation by the Curriculum Specialist highlighted the importance of taking into account the different learning abilities and learning styles of the children while planning each lesson. She detailed how Blossom has designed the ‘Triple Track Syllabus’ to cater to the different learning abilities of the children. She also highlighted the teaching approaches and strategies in planning lessons to cater to the Visual, Auditory and Kineasthetic learning styles of children. This ensures that every child in Blossom is able to derive the maximum benefit from the lessons.

Lastly, the principal ended the night by going through the results of our annual survey held in 2010 and sharing parents’ responses to the Parent Partnership Programme. It was heartening to note that majority of our parents welcomes the opportunities provided by the school to play a part in their child’s learning and finds the activities designed highly meaningful.

Meeting Mr Postman @ Singapore Philatelic Museum

Colouring our very own stamps!

Off we went to one of Singapore’s ‘Places of Interest’: Singapore Philatelic Museum for holiday excursion this December! Singapore Philatelic Museum aims to educate children about stamps and their uses, the duties of a postman and how mail are delivered.

While there, the children and teachers visited a 2-story gallery showcasing the history of mail eg: stamps, postmen, delivery modes etc. The Playgroup and Nursery 1 children attended the activity “Stamps Are Fun” while the Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2 had a chance to “Meet Mr Postman!”

The younger group of children were brought to a room where the facilitator showed them pictures of different types of stamps. . The children also played a memory matching game using the stamps. After the activity, they were given stamp colouring worksheets to design their own stamps and express their creativity through colours! At the end of the day, all the children became proud owners of their own stamps, tottering off back to school with stamp sticker souvenirs too!

Mr Tan taught the children how to sort mails manually into the correct slots.

The other group went to meet Postman Tan, who was the Postman of the day! An interactive and amusing guy, the children had a hilarious time with him during all his activities. Postman Tan briefed the children about the different types of stamps that were used back in the olden days and present.

After a demonstration of how to deliver mails, the children were eager to have a go at delivering mails on their own! Postman Tan also gave the children the opportunity to stamp envelopes!
