Actions really do speak louder than words and parental role modeling helps teach children to be caring and kind. In fact, parents have the power to nurture, guide, show and instill kindness, responsibility and gentleness. Young children do not automatically use manners. Like apologizing and sharing, learning to use manners is part of a child’s social development and is best learnt through modelling and coaching, not by force. When children are polite, kind and honest, they develop character and also make their parents look good!

Good manners are important skills children should develop when they are young.  After all, manners are beneficial for the rest of their lives. For children to be successful in life, they need to have social skills as well as academic skills. And if parents help young children learn polite and caring behavior, they will continue to use good manners and become more socially aware as they get older. Children become what they absorb around them. Be what you want them to become, and treat them the way you wish them to learn to be with others.

As such, Blossom organised an interactive ‘Playtime’ workshop on ‘Good Manners’ to help parents learn to educate their child with this ‘lifelong survival skill’ and learn tips on how to make learning manners fun! The workshop was conducted on the morning of 23 July 2011 (Sat) at Blossom Creative Centre (Bedok branch).  The trainer, Ms Rosalind Yeow, is a trained facilitator for Parenting with Confidence and Playtime programs. She is passionate about proactive parenting and encouraging families to set a good foundation especially while their children are young.

All participants, young and old had loads of fun as Ms Yeow offered great advice for our parents and engaged the children in a myraid of fun activities to promote good manners among them. Besides having fun, she also gave parents some tips on how to instil good manners in their children. During the workshop, we learnt that teaching young kids manners is an on-going process. Try to be patient, and keep our expectations in line with what our child is capable of achieving at his/her age. Our time and patience will be rewarded every time he/she says “please” and “thank you”. The session ended with parents taking home valuable knowledge and tips for practising good manners with their children.

Every child is capable of age-appropriate manners. We cannot expect young children to be perfectly well-behaved all the time but we can get them in the habit of practising polite behavior early on. Children become what they absorb around them. Be what you want them to become and treat them the way you wish them to learn to be with others.

Besides writing freelance for parenting magazines, she is also actively involved in parenting projects and a variety of family bonding events.

Rosalind is happily married to Andrew. As a family, they love playing board games and going swimming with their children – Samantha, Samuel and Steward.

All prepped and ready to take in instructions from the trainer to start baking!

To celebrate Father’s Day, Blossom Creative  collaborated with ‘Cookie Monzter’ to whip up a personal, baked from scratch themed surprise for daddies, titled “My Daddy’s Car!”  As research has shown that fathers play an important role in a child’s personal development and proactive fathers bring about a positive impact on a child’s success story in life, our school jumped at the opportunity to organise a parent-child activity and was delighted to invite the men of the houses to roll up their sleeves and join in the fun baking and decorating muffins with their little ones…

With flour and baking materials strewn all over the table tops, it was a messy but very productive baking day in school. Coupled with all the daddies who took time-off from work to give support to their little aspiring baking chefs, Blossom Creative transformed into a mini bakery churning out tantalising muffin after muffin! The most endearing part was watching the daddies put in their best effort in assisting their child/children perfect the art of baking!  

Many parents expressed their appreciation to the school for taking the initiative to plan this activity where busy daddies could spend quality time with their children out of their own homes and in the school, a home away from home. And needless to say, we teachers, together with the kids and daddies, all had a jolly good time baking and decorating the muffins together! A BIG hug to all parents who made time to participate in this activity with your precious lil’ ones!

Mr Lawrence Lim, answering parents’ queries.

Blossom’s annual Curriculum Briefing session saw a number of keen parents participating in it.

This year we incorporated 3 new improvements to our curriculum:  The highly acclaimed ‘Kindermusik’ programme in our Playgroup and Nursery 1 Creative Expression subject, a newly re-vamped and improved English Creative Writing enrichment programme and our Parent Partnership Programme.

During the session, parents were briefed on the goals and deliverables from our two new programmes, as well as, gain a further insight into our other subjects and a browse through with our teaching resources.

Research suggests that a critical factor in a child’s education success is parental involvement.

It strengthens the connection between home and school and enables our children to reach their full potential academically, socially and developmentally.

In line with this, during the last December holiday, we invited our parents to get themselves actively involved through storytelling, sharing their talents and offering their time to come down for a Kindermusik celebration and demonstration!

Just look at all our teachers, parents and children having a fantastic time participating in our Kindermusik celebration and demonstration!

Parents listened for tips on preparing healthy snacks .

This year, we invited a vendor from Eat Wise Pte Ltd for our first Parents’ Workshop to share their expertise on healthy eating with the parents.

The little ones were engaged in their own little corner.

While the parents were listening attentively to the speaker, the little ones were tugged away in another corner having their own “mini workshop”.

The highlight of the workshop was the hands-on cookery session. Parents and children were given some ingredients, healthy ones of course, to whip out their very own snacks. Take a look at how engrossed they were!

“Blossom’s curriculum is the outcome of discerning research in contemporary educational practices and strategic adoption of technological advancements.”

The Curriculum Briefing for Blossom Berrykidz Centre was held on 19 Jan 2009 as part of our continual efforts to collaborate with our parents in our children’s learning and development.

The briefing started off with an overview of Blossom’s Curriculum Structure and Programme. Mr Lawrence Lim, our principal also went on to explain how the Comparative Benchmark in the e-Portal should be interpreted and how the VAK Learning Styles (Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic) are incorporated in our teaching. Our parents also took the opportunity to share some of their concerns and feedback during the curriculum briefing.

This briefing was a successful opportunity to further enhance parents’ understanding of Blossom’s curriculum and e-profiling design principals.
